Cross-linked files were found
When you delete the file, each cluster assigned to that file is marked "free to be used. This causes another error for example, CHKDSK may report a file allocation error, size adjusted or file allocation error, or file truncated. You also lose access to the file from the part that was stored in the beginning of the cross-linked cluster to the end of the file.
MS-DOS should be able to make a copy of both files although one will probably be corrupt. If you don't want to delete both files, copy them to a floppy disk or another subdirectory before deleting them.

There may not be any depending.
CHK File in Windows? You may or may not be able to actually use any of the recovered fragments. A professional recovery service may be able to help with those and even recover other files though those are expensive. The pages appear to be providing accurate, safe information.
I believe cross linked is something about two files on the same "spot" on the drive? I am reasonable on a computer as long as it is in plain english and not too complicated. I did read on a help forum somewhere that someone else had this problem and he or she said they had found the files and deleted them but I cant find the forum again. Often times when this problem is corrected you end up losing a part of one or both files. Sad, but true. JohnWill Retired Moderator. Joined Oct 19, Messages , The error is reported when two files report using the same cluster on the disk, so it's clear that at least one of the files can't have data stored in that cluster.
Hi again So we all agree its two files trying to be in the same place at the same time ,which as we all know even a computer cant do yet! So is it re-format and start again? Oh well so be it! Thanks anyway guys. Well, you don't necessarily have to format, but you should assume that one or both of the files in question have been damaged. How many crosslinked files you have determines the course of action. If you have dozens, chances are that your disk is pretty scrambled, best to recover what data you can and start over.
If you have one or two, you may be able to recover in a more simple manner. Hi I have no idea how many ,so looks like start again Thanks to you all for trying And Hope everyone has a very happy new year Bye for now. Best of luck to you. Look at the bright side, you will have a clean computer as you start the new year,.
Thanks for all the ideas Got it sorted out by re-format and start again now have a fresh, healthy computer!! Norton or McAfee, but we have solved many problems over the years by having them uninstalled. Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files, and also Step 16 to test a new Local Admin account.
Then continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly. This reinstalls Windows in about an hour while saving your files, apps and most settings, solves many problems while also bringing it up to the latest version which you need anyway and by the most stable method. I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved. The pages appear to be providing accurate, safe information.
