Enjoyable read. Nov 23, Autumn added it. I got this book for my brother who loves baseball and thought I'd read it before I gave it to him. The reason I didn't rate this book is because about the only thing I know about baseball is that the Yankees come from New York. Don't the Mets come from New York too? Why does New York need two baseball teams?
Now, you baseball officianados can see how dense I am about baseball. I would not recommend this to anyone who doesn't love baseball. I think that there simply was so much I missed because o I got this book for my brother who loves baseball and thought I'd read it before I gave it to him.
I think that there simply was so much I missed because of my lack of knowledge about the sport. I'm a lover of Emma's dad's writing about his farm, his animals and especially his dogs. That's how I learned about Emma's book, on John Katz's blog. I'm delighted to read other reviews from real baseball fans. I think my brother will like the book, even though he's 70 years old and Emma is in her 20s. From reading her book and knowing my brother, it sounds like the baseball fans are varied, and can connect with each other no matter what their age or any other demographic.
May 20, GraceAnne rated it really liked it. Emma Span is a fine and imaginative writer, and she writes about the process of writing about baseball and thinking about baseball and caring about baseball with energy and delight. She's a bit too self-deprecating in these pages, perhaps, but she is definitely someone I would have a Guinness with, and we can talk about Donnie Baseball, among others. May 02, Alan Williams rated it really liked it. You don't have to be a fan of baseball to enjoy this one.
There were several moments that had me chuckling out loud, as the author relays the ups and downs of being both a sports fan and a sportswriter. Sep 16, Bryan Hall rated it really liked it. More about being a fan than about baseball itself, which definitely worked for me.
Some of the commentary on modern sportswriting old-school newsmen vs. Great work from one of my favorite Twitter follows. Aug 05, Jen rated it really liked it. I'm 10 pages in and I already can't stop laughing. Aug 01, Tom Steele rated it it was ok Shelves: own. Anyone who makes fun of Yadier Molina is going to lose points.
Jul 18, Mark rated it liked it Shelves: sports , memoir. Jun 21, Carolyn rated it really liked it. Highly entertaining personal and dare I say it, feminine perspective on baseball -- I got a real kick out of it.
I have to read at least one baseball book each season. This was a fun one where the author seemed to have a difficult time tiptoeing the line between being a true fan and reporting the sport. However, several players have had their lucky bats stolen by the rival team. Can you work out which lucky bat belongs to which player, how old each player is and where the bats were hidden?
Clue 2: Twenty-three year old Josh does not bat using the Big Gun which is buried under home plate. Clue 3: The bat that is hidden under a bench in the locker room belongs to a player who is two years younger than Dave and belongs to a player who is two years older than one who uses the Bomber which isn't hidden in the team van.
Clue 4: Nick located his lucky bat in the other team's dugout. Clue 5: The twenty-five year old, who does not use the Moonshot, finally found his lucky bat in the team's van. Question 1: Let's lob one in. Which player found his lucky bat in the dugout?
Which player found his baseball bat in the team van? Tajh Boyd and Co. Meanwhile, in that stretch since the Clemson game our guys have done everything to turn it around.
Logan Thomas alone has accounted for 23…let me repeat, 23 touchdowns with only two interceptions during the Duke game. Logan has assuredly done his part to mature throughout the season, but proper due should also be given to our reeling Defense and Offensive line play.
It was a God damn promise. Now, that being said, anyone who treats this Clemson team with anything less than respect is outright foolish.
